Unit 3: A Century of Transitions 1815 - 1914

Activity 1: The Role of the Individual in History

Overview

In this unit you will familiarize yourself with the different views on the role of the individual in history. Historians vary in their interpretations of change. You will ponder the question: do events shape history or do people? For example, some historians think that Napoleon changed French and European histories because of his greatness. Others believe that a leader like Napoleon was inevitable, given the events of the day. This debate has sometimes been referred to as the Great Man Theory (today it’s the role of the individual in history).

An interactive quiz will be undertaken, introducing a range of historians and their views relating to the Role of the Individual in History. Afterwards you will apply their understanding to an assignment in which they select key historical figures and assess their role in making change.
